George Heinrich Ernsberger1,2 (M)

Charts:
Pedigree for Gene William Arnspiger
Descendant Chart for George Heinrich Ernsberger

Reference: AAR00046

Birth*: George was born in Germany (Palatinate) circa 1720.
Biography*: Henry, as he was commonly called, is listed on the passenger list of the ship Charming Nancy, Charles Stedman, Master. He arrived in the port of Philadelphia on October 8, 1737. He took the Oath of Allegiance that same day. The passengers were Palatines imported from Rotterdam, last from Plymouth. The spelling of his name on the original ship list was Georg Henrick Ansparger. On a different copy of the same list Henry's name is spelled Jerg Heinrich Ernsperger. Henry was most probably single, but over 16 years of age since he took the oath of allegiance. That would make his date of birth circa 1720. It is possible that the Christian Hersberg also on the same ship, with his wife Barbara and his children Anna and Peter, is a brother to Henry, but no proof of that has been found. Henry was a cordwainer (leatherworker who made things of cordovan, especially shoes) and a farmer. He married Maria Magdalena Rausch about 1740-41, probably in the First Reformed Church of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although a record has not yet been found. (From cemetery records) One of the earliest found records of land transactions is that of Henry Ernsperger (Arnsperger) buying 99 acres of land from Hans Neisley in Conestoga Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Hans Neisley had bought 200 acres of land from Christopher Franciscus. He sold 99 acres to Henry on 15 April, 1747 and another 100 acres to Phillip Knight. The warrant was dated 26 April, 1748 and returned by Henry 28 April, 1748. Henry received his patent 2 May 1748. Conestoga Township is located in the southwest portion of Lancaster County. Its western border is the Susquehanna River. It is bordered on the northwest by Manor Township and Manheim Township, on the north by Lampetre Township, and on the south by Martock Township. Henry's land was in close proximity to Conestoga Creek and Mill Creek in that township. On 16 January, 1750, Henry and Magdalena mortgaged 99 acres to Phillip Ellog for 100 pounds; signed by Henry in German. Soon after this Henry and Magdalena decided to move to Donegal Township which lies west of Conestoga Township along the Susquehanna River. Henry sold his 99 acres in Conestoga Township to Daniel Keepots on 5 July, 1751. He received 370 pounds for his land. Between 1751 and 1754 Henry and Magdalena purchased 225 acres of land in Donegal Township. It appears Henry either became very ill or had a serious accident sometime in January, 1754. His will is dated 25 January, 1754 and it was witnessed by Christian Fox and Charles Glasses. The will was verified on 6 March 1754. From this Henry died sometime in February, 1754. The inventory of the estate was filed 6 March, 1754 and valued at 556 pounds 19 shillings 6 pence. Henry did not mention his children in his will except to leave 1/3 to them. Henry died at a relatively young age. Probably 35-40 years old. He left Magdalena with probably six minor children. The oldest being about 12 years old and the youngest being only 2 years old. Magdalena remarried within one year of Henry's death to Christian Fox (Fuchs), a witness to Henry's will. On 5 March 1755, Christian and Magdalena Fox petitioned the Court to sell part of the 225 acres of land from Henry's estate to pay debts of the estate. The petition was granted. On 18 May 1755 Christian and Magdalena were sponsors for the baptism of Magdalena Grund, daughter of Henry and Catherine Grund, in the First Reformed Church of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Magdalena and Christian bought and sold land in Donegal Township through 1772. About this time, they moved into York County, which is across the Susquehanna River from Donegal Twp. Christian is buried in the Reformed and Lutheran Cemetery, in Arendtsville. Arendtsville is located twenty miles north of Hagerstown, Maryland, where Christopher Ernsberger settled.

Biography*: Paul is first listed in the records of Strasburg township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, as a Freeman. It is well known that he married Maria Thorodea Bruner, but no marriage record has been found. A daughter, Esther Maria, was born 9 March 1775 and died 22 August 1775. This record was found on an obscure church record on microfilm. It was the Old Trinity Lutheran Church records. Sometime in 1775 Paul and Maria, along with most of Maria's family moved from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Located in close proximity to Bedford County, is York and Cumberland County, where Paul's mother and step-father, Magdalena and Christian Fox (Fuchs) resided. Also, Henry Arnsberger, probably Paul's brother, was living in Cumberland County. Christopher Ernsberger, probably another brother, was residing in Washington County, Maryland, which is right next to York County. So although Paul seemed to be moving with his wife's family, it appears he was also moving closer to his own family. Paul is listed on the tax lists in Bedford County, Turkeyfoot township in 1776 and paid 7.2 1/4 pounds. There is a request for ownership of land in Turkeyfoot township on 16 October 1776. In 1783, Paul paid taxes of 5.5 (pounds) and had 2 horses, 3 cattle, 2 sheep and 150 acres. In the 1784 census, Paul is found with 7 people and 150 acres. On January 10, 1785, Paul received Warrant #32 for 100 acres named "Does Range". The patent was received 7 April, 1795. After much searching, a record of Paul's military service was found. He is listed as a member of the Second Battalion, Second Company, commanded by William Jones, dated May, 1788. Another record, dated 5 February, 1788, lists Paul as subject to militia duty in Milford township, Bedford County. In the 1790 census of Bedford County, Paul is listed with 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16 and 3 females. Sometime between 1790 and 1795, Paul travelled to Kentucky with other members of the Bruner family. Paul was present in Jessamine County, Kentucky for the first 4th of July celebration given by William Price. It was in honor of those who served during the Revolutionary War. On May 8, 1795, Paul gave his Power of Attorney to Henry Bruner, a brother-in-law, to make a deed to George Friend. The Ernstberger's were in Kentucky. Henry Bruner sold Paul's land on September 5, 1796 to George Friend for 75 pounds. Paul and his family were in Jessamine county, Kentucky by that time. The following is an excerpt from the History of Jessamine County: "Jessamine Creek winds its course through a soil of wonderful fertility, and then narrowing to a modest width, glides through meadows and woodland. Hard beaten roads intersect each other over a fine landscape of rare beauty, at times winding past neat and pretty farm-houses and spacious barns; and at others lost seemingly in the dark woods of oak and cedar which cast their shadows over the way. The writer well remembers that one pleasant September morning in 1869 he set out on foot to visit the mouth of Jessamine Creek. After following the course of the creek about sixteen miles, arrived at the point where the creek empties into Kentucky River. The road was exceedingly rough and tortuous and led along the tops of high banks and precipices, through which the creek tumbled and foamed over a rocky bed to the river. The scenery all along Jessamine creek is strikingly beautiful. The hills and cliffs are admirably set off by a growth of cedar trees. The stream, where it empties into Kentucky River, runs smoothly over a solid bed of limestone rock of great depth. As you stand on its border, with the rocks rising perpendicularly before you, watching the silvery tide pouring itself as it were from the blue bosom of the sky into the depth below, the scene is irresistibly charming." No record has been found of Paul's initial land purchase in Kentucky. However, he is listed in the 1799 tax list as owning 80 acres. He appears on the tax list every year after that until 1822. Paul and Mary, as his wife was called, bought and sold land over the next twenty years in Jessamine County. It appears they were never rich land owners, but prosperous enough in their own right. To survive the rigors of settling a new and wild country like Kentucky is testimony enough of what kind of people the Arnspigers were. No record is found of Paul after the 1821 tax list. It appears he and Mary were living with their daughter, Polly and her husband, John Houser, as an old couple is listed in the 1820 census. Mary lived to be 96 years old and died in Eminence Twp., Logan County, Il. where she had been living with her daughter Polly Arnspiger Houser.

Move: Sometime during late 1793 or early 1794, Paul moved to Fayette county, Kentucky. Whether his entire family came with him at this time is unknown, although it is known that his family was with him by 1796.
Meeting*: First Fourth of July Celebration west of the Alleghanies took place at the home of Colonel William M Price, five miles west of Nicholasville, Jessamine County, Kentucky in 1794. ....Nine or ten years had given time for many others to have built good comfortable homes and for life to have settled into pleasant ways, when Colonel William Price decided to stage the first Fourth of July celebration in this new land to the west at his Kentucky home on the banks of Clear Creek in 1794, sending our couriers bearing invitations to forty old Revolutionary comrades in this section of Kentucky to come together and "fittingly observe Independence Day". These forty hearty men were, no doubt, up at the break of day to start through the dim forest bridle paths and over the few wilderness roads or traces, to be on hand early for this eventful feast of food, conversation and companionship; renewing friendships which had been woven together by ties of hard fought battles and of struggling efforts to settle a wild country far from native homes in Virginia. Each, doubtless, rode a spirited and shining horse, for even in those early days fine horses were highly valued in Kentucky and there are some stirring records of horse races on the wilderness traces.

Knowing Colonel William's religious and patriotic fervor, we can be sure that before that bountiful repast was partaken of either the Reverend Nathaniel Harris or the Reverend John Walters said Grace and that several spontaneous speeches were made. I am sure, too, that Colonel William had planned an old fashioned Muster for the afternoon's entertainment over on the large west meadow by the winding creek. On these occasions all able-bodied, arm-bearing men in each military district must gather at stated intervals for a series of drills. Such occasions, too, were given over to festivities, at which horse racing, rifle shooting and all manner of athletic contests were indulged in. These musters were usually followed in the evening with dancing and merry-making, and once can be sure that the daughters of the house of Price had been pleading for a dancing party and the neighborhood boys and girls for many miles around were invited..20
Powerofatt*: Paul granted a power of attorney in Somerset, PA, on 8 May 1795 to John, his brother-in-law.17

Paul continues to show up in the tax rolls through 1821, when he has only one horse to be taxed. The variations of the spelling of his name on the tax lists are Ansparger, Hanspiger, Handspiger among some..25

Henry Arnspiger1 (M)

Charts:
Descendant Chart for George Heinrich Ernsberger

Birth*: Henry was born circa 1778.
He was the son of Paul Arnspiger and Maria Dorothea Bruner.
Note*: Henry Arnspiger circa 1780 in Bedford, Pa. The dates for this individual are very questionable. He first appears on a tax list in 1802. However, his first child was born in Feb 1797 which means he had to have married in 1796. Estimate his age at the time of his marriage as 18 years old. Was he living with his father and that is why he is not on the tax rolls??? Was he in another county?? Why does he not appear until 1802??? Is he actually on the tax roll, just with his name misspelled and therefore not found?? Did he stay in Bedford county, PA, marry there and then come to Kentucky??? Is he in Fayette county, Kentucky which is what Jessamine county Kentucky was in 1797??? The birth date for the first child is sure level 4. If we estimate his age at 18 then he was born in 1778. This is my hypothesis at this time. 8/11/99. He would have been 16 in 1795 when the family moved to Kentucky. Perhaps he stayed behind with his uncle John Bruner, who had power of attorney from Paul to sell his land in Bedford. If he married in 1796, no record has been found in Jessamine. Has anyone looked in Bedford?? Also perhaps looking in Fayette county KY would be productive.
Marriage*: He married Elizabeth ? in Fayette, Ky, circa 1796. Henry's first child was born Feb 1797 based on information from his descendents. It is possible the marriage was in Bedford county, PA..
Deed*: He sold property in Jessamine, KY, in 1825. This deed lists Elizabeth, wife of Henry, as a grantor also. The deed is for 45 3/4 acres. John is Henry's oldest son..2
Probate*: Henry's will was probated in Jessamine, KY, in 1833. The appraisal of the estate shows the estate settled 26 Sept 1834. Note signed by Stephen Arnspiger and Henry Rhorer. On 14 Sept 1836 a deed in Jessamine county (Book M, p 40) shows Elizabeth Arnspiger, widow of Henry Arnspiger, selling to Johnson Mitchell, 95+ acres on Jessamine creek. On 26 Mar 1838 an Indenture for sale of Henry Arnspiger land by John Arnspiger mentioning all living Henry Arnspiger heirs at this time, i.e. John, Stephen, David, Samuel, Mary Grow, wife of Christopher Grow, Sarah, Catherine all over 21 years, also George and Frances infants under 21 years. He was the son of Paul Arnspiger and Maria Dorothea Bruner.
Taxroll*: Christopher Arnspiger was tax roll in 1805 in Jessamine, KY, Christopher appears on the Jessamine county tax list starting in 1805. He continues on the list most of the years until 1828 at which time he disappears. It is possible he moved with his family to Bourbon county, Ky. The name is spelled numerous ways on the taxlist.2
Marriage*: He married Elizabeth Sageser in Fayette, Ky, on 25 July 1805.3
Landcontra*: He purchased land on 13 October 1808 in Jessamine, KY. The deed reads in part, as follows: Jacob Grow of Montgomery county, Ohio of the first part.... CtOrder: Christopher Arnspiger appeared in the Court Order books in June 1809 in Nicholasville, Jessamine, KY. Christopher was appointed surveyor of the Frankfort road from the Hickman road to Jessamine creek and to call on the hands of the precinct of said road to keep the same in repair.5
Deed*: He was deed in 1810 in Jessamine, KY, This deed states Abraham Houser Sr binds to Christian Ernspiger in the amount of $500 the creek that flowed through Christopher's land which was on either side of the east fork of Jessamine creek. Move*: He may have moved circa 1829 in Bourbon, Ky. This is conjecture only, but since Christopher disappeared from the tax lists in 1829 and also resigned his duties regarding the maintenance of certain roads in Jessamine county, it is very possible he moved his family to Bourbon county, Ky around this time. Michael Arnspiger1,2 (M)
Pedigree

Charts:
Pedigree for Gene William Arnspiger
Descendant Chart for Joseph Bowman
Descendant Chart for George Heinrich Ernsberger

Birth*: Michael was born in Bedford, PA, circa 1782.3
He was the son of Paul Arnspiger and Maria Dorothea Bruner.
Note*: According to the book, Genealogy of the Houser, Rhorer, Dillman, Hoover Families, compiled by Dr W.W. Houser, Michael and Esther had four sons who died in infancy. No record of these children has been found. The 1810 and 1820 census do seem to verify that statement. In 1810 he has 3 males under 16 and in 1820 he has 3 males under 16 but none over 16. In the graveyard where Paul Arnspiger's headstone was discovered, there is a stone next to it that reads 1827 Aug 10 J Arnspiger. I believe this may be one of Michael's sons.4
Anecdote*: Michael Arnspiger was the subject of a story. "In 1802 there was a quarterhorse race on the track, and in the hearing of the crowd, Major Netherland announced that on a certain day (naming it) there would be another race for a purse of $50.00, one mile heats, which was 'free for anything with four legs and hair on .' At that time there was working on a farm a young man named Michael Arnspiger who had broken a bull to the saddle, which he rode to mill. He immediately put the bull in training and for several days gave him turns around the race track. He used spurs on the bull and when these were dug into his sides, he was accustomed to bellow. On the day of the race Arnspiger appeared on the ground with his bull. He had placed a dried hide of an ox on the bull's rump, and he carried a tin horn in his hands. He demanded of the judges the right to enter his animal, to which the owners of the horses vehemently objected, but Arnspiger answered by appealing to Major Netherland if he had not said that the race was free to 'anything with four legs and hair on.' Maj. Netherland admitted that he had, and explained that the bull had a right to enter. When the drum was tapped, Arnspiger blew his horn, planted his spurs in the sides of the bull, which bounded off with a dreadful bellow, with the ox-hide flapping on his sides and presenting a spectacle, combined with the noise, that had never been seen on the race track before. The horses immediately flew the track, and Arnspiger galloped home a winner. The losers contended that they were swindled out of their money; that Arnspiger should not have been allowed to blow the tin horn, or use the ox-hide, and that but for this he could not have won the race. Thereupon Arnspiger offered to take the ox-hide off and leave his tin horn at the stand and run them from end to end. Mr. Willoughby and Mr. Netherland were judges at the next start. Arnspiger again planted his spurs into the sides of the bull with redoubled fury. The loud bellow that followed drove the horses from the track despite the exertions of the riders, and Arnspiger pulled in the second $50 purse. With the money thus obtained he purchased a blacksmithing outfit, working for many years at his trade near Wilmore, and died there in the sixties, in the 85th year of his age.....5

"...Down near the Kentucky River in Jessamine County, the famous old pioneer soldier colonel Benjamin Netherland offered a $50 prize for the best one-mile heat 'free to anything with four legs and hair on.' This was a challenge to the rollicking Irishman Michael Arnspiger. He pretended to take Colonel Netherland's offer literally and proceeded to train a bull to run in the race. On the day of the great contest Arnspiger appeared at the race path astride his bull. His equipment was outlandish enough to frighten every horse in the country. Across his long-horned charger's back was thrown a dried bull's hide which gave him a hideous appearance. Arnspiger carried a tin horn and wore long sharp-pointed spurs. Every time he dug the spurs into the bull's side, the animal sent up a bloodcurdling bellow. The horsemen gathered around the post with their nervous mounts to challenge the right of the eccentric Arnspiger to enter the race, but the judges ruled that it was 'free to anything with four legs and hair on.' When at last the flag was dropped and the jockeys headed down the path, the devilish Michael dug his spurs in the bull's side, blew his horn and set forth. The bull bellowed like Gabriel's trumpet, the horses took to the woods, and Arnspiger trotted home astride the bull - winner of the purse." From the book, The Kentucky Bluegrass Kentuckian by Thomas D Clark. Although MIchael was not Irish, the remainder of the account coincides with the account of the History of Jessamine county..6
Marriage*: He married Esther Bowman in Jessamine, KY, on 9 October 1804.7,8,9,10
Census1810*: Michael was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census in Jessamine, KY.11
