Biography*: Letter from subject to daughter, Jo Archer,1985...My dad died in chicago, he was 64, of cancer of the throat. He had been living with me and my brother in Cincinnati. We took him to Billing Hospital in Chicago. Had a terrible battle with some of my sisters and brother. He was in terrible pain and the Dr told me it was just a matter of days and they were just keeping him alive, so I told them to stop all artificial support and let him die in peace, but to keep him doped up for the pain. Took about five years before some of the sisters finally agreed it was the best thing to do. I lived first on Plantation outside Drew Miss. Dad was Rider and Bookkeeper; then we moved to Drew where he opened a grocery "General" store. This was during the depression and he extended credit to so many people who could not or would not pay that he finally went bankrupt - about 5 to 6 years. Then we moved to Greenwood Miss where he managed a store for approximately 6 years. Then we moved to Jackson Miss where he managed a grocery store "Jitney Jungle" plus working parttime evenings for City as an accountant. Dad and Mom separated for about three years and Mom and children went to live with her Parents in Memphis Tenn. I went into the service from Jackson 1941, so kinda lost track. But Dad and Rerry, Nita, John and Pat moved to Ft Worth. Mom had passed away in Jackson, MS 43 years old, 1940, too many children I guess. Mom's father Harry was a railroad man engineer, St Louis & Memphis when I knew him alived with them. He was retired and he and Catherine were running a Mom & Pop store in Memphis. ... My Dad's Father, had a general store in Centervilee Miss also a Farm. He was 81 or 82 when he died in Centerville.
